The Coin Trick. Do This Today, For Free.

A refrigerator tells you it has failed because you open it every day. A garage freezer can fail on a Tuesday and go unnoticed until Sunday, by which point it is several hundred dollars of food. So do this once: freeze a cup of water solid, then set a coin on top of the ice and leave it there. If you ever come back and the coin has sunk to the bottom, the freezer thawed and refroze while you were not looking, and everything inside is suspect. If it is still on top, you are fine. It costs nothing and it is the only warning system a freezer has.

Placement & Ambient Check

Your freezer may be fine. Your garage may not be.

Most freezers are built for a climate-controlled room. Put one in a South Florida garage in August and it will run constantly, struggle to hold zero, and wear out years early, with nothing actually broken. This is the check almost nobody runs first.

Garage-Ready Only90 to 110°F
Past EverythingOver 110°F
Garage-ready models are built and tested for 38°F to 110°F ambient. Standard models are specified for indoor climate-controlled rooms only, and the manufacturers do not publish a high limit for them because they do not expect one to be needed.
Verdict
Placement is not your problem

Either way, these help a freezer in a hot space
  • Clean the condenser coils and clear anything stacked against the back or underneath
  • Leave real clearance: heat has to go somewhere and a wall three inches away is not somewhere
  • Keep it full. A packed freezer holds cold far better than an empty one and cycles less
  • Keep it out of direct sun and away from a dryer vent or water heater
  • Put a thermometer inside and actually look at it, because a freezer will not tell you

The 38 to 110 degree garage-ready range and the note that standard units are intended for indoor climate-controlled environments come from published manufacturer guidance, which also states that outside its rated range a unit may run excessively, stress its components, or fail to hold safe food temperatures. If your model is genuinely garage-ready it will say so on the rating plate or in the manual. When in doubt, tell us the model number and we will look it up.

Hurricane Outage Plan

Same question every summer. Answer it early.

A freezer full of food is one of the more expensive things in the house to lose, and the decisions that save it get made before the power goes out rather than after. Set your freezer up below and get the plan.

How full is it

Sizes are printed on the model plate or in the manual. If you have no idea, a typical upright or chest freezer in a Florida garage is somewhere between 7 and 20 cubic feet, and 15 is a fair guess for a family unit.

Your Situation
A full freezer buys you two days

Holding times and the dry ice figure are published USDA and FoodSafety.gov guidance: food stays safe up to 48 hours in a full freezer and 24 hours in a half-full freezer with the door kept closed, 50 pounds of dry ice holds an 18 cubic foot freezer for 2 days, and appliance thermometers belong in both the refrigerator and the freezer with the freezer at 0 degrees. Refreeze only what still has ice crystals or is at 40 degrees or below. Never handle dry ice with bare hands or lay it directly on food. When in doubt, throw it out.

What We Service

Chest, upright, column or commercial.

Why A Specialist Matters

A freezer holds more value than the freezer is worth.

That is the whole argument for taking this one seriously. A chest freezer might cost a few hundred dollars and routinely holds more than that in meat, fish and a season of batch cooking. When it fails, the appliance is rarely the expensive part of the problem, and unlike a refrigerator it fails without an audience.

It is also the appliance where the answer is most often not a repair at all. A standard freezer in an uncooled Florida garage is doing something it was never specified to do, and no part we fit will change that. We check placement and ambient before we condemn anything, and if that is your answer you get it for free.

We service South Palm Beach and Broward Counties, from Boynton Beach and Boca Raton down through Fort Lauderdale and northern Hollywood. Looking for the freezer compartment inside your refrigerator rather than a standalone unit? That is the refrigerator repair page.

Freezer Questions

Asked before every booking, answered here.

You can if it is a garage-ready model, which manufacturers build and test for ambient temperatures from 38 to 110 degrees. A standard freezer is specified for an indoor climate-controlled room, and in a Florida garage that hits triple digits it will run almost continuously, struggle to hold zero, and wear out years early with nothing actually broken. Run the placement check on this page: it is the single most useful thing on it.
Published USDA guidance is up to 48 hours in a full freezer and 24 hours in a half-full one, with the door kept closed the entire time. Every time you open it to check, you spend some of that. Fifty pounds of dry ice will hold an 18 cubic foot freezer for a further two days. Use the outage planner on this page to get the numbers for your freezer and a plan to go with them.
Judge item by item rather than writing off the whole freezer. Anything that still has ice crystals in it, or is at 40 degrees or below, can be safely refrozen, though the texture may suffer. Anything that has been above 40 degrees for more than two hours should be discarded, and that includes thawed meat, poultry and seafood. Do not taste anything to decide. When in doubt, throw it out.
That is normal and it is a sign of a good seal. Closing the lid pushes out warm air, which then cools and contracts, and the resulting vacuum holds the lid down for a minute or two. Wait, and it will open. What is not normal is a lid that never seals flat, a gasket with a visible gap, or frost forming in a line along one edge, which is cold air escaping and humid Florida air getting in.
Depends on the freezer. A manual defrost chest freezer is supposed to accumulate frost and wants defrosting once or twice a year, and in this humidity possibly more. A frost-free upright is not, and heavy frost there means the defrost heater, thermostat or control has failed. On either type, frost forming fast or in one particular spot usually means humid air is getting in past a seal.
Same-day service is available across South Palm Beach and Broward Counties, and a freezer full of food that is thawing is priority dispatch. Keep the lid shut in the meantime. The service call and diagnostic are both FREE with any approved repair. If you decide not to proceed, the visit is $69 residential or $129 commercial.
More often than people assume. Chest freezers are mechanically simple, they run for decades, and the common failures are start relays, thermostats, gaskets and fans rather than anything terminal. A sealed system failure on a basic chest unit is the case where replacement can win, and we will tell you that honestly with the written quote. Built-in columns and premium units are worth repairing almost without exception.
