Free standing ice makers fail differently from built-in ones, and two of the causes cost nothing to rule out. One: clearance. A free standing unit dumps its heat out of the back and sides, and the published requirement is four inches all round. Pushed into a cabinet or backed against a wall it re-breathes its own hot air, makes half the ice, and eventually stops. Two: the room. Countertop portables are specified for 59 to 90 degrees. A Florida garage, a patio or a closed-up second home in August is outside that, and no part we fit changes it. Both checks are on this page. This is the single biggest difference between a free standing ice maker and a built-in one, and it is the reason we get called out to machines with nothing wrong with them. Set your install below and see what your unit is actually breathing.
The four inch figure is not ours. A representative manufacturer installation manual for an undercounter ice maker specifies at least 4 inches of clearance at both sides, at the top and at the back for a free standing installation, against 3/16 inch at the sides, 1/16 inch at the top and 2 inches at the back for the same machine built in, because it exhausts through a front vent. Portable countertop manuals commonly repeat the same four inch figure and add a recommended room temperature of 59 to 90 degrees. Your model may differ, so check its manual, but the principle does not: a unit that vents backward can never be installed as though it vents forward.
Every ice maker on the market advertises a pounds-per-day number, and that number is measured in conditions almost nobody here has. Before you assume yours has failed, find out what it should actually be making in your kitchen, your garage or your patio.
A countertop portable holds about a pound and a half in its basket and stops when the basket is full. Twenty six pounds a day is what it makes if something removes the ice continuously for twenty four hours. Empty it twice a day and you get three pounds, and the machine is working perfectly.
Portables work in batches, and the manuals put a cycle at six to fifteen minutes depending on cube size and room temperature. Warmer room, longer cycle. If yours has slowed from eight minutes to fourteen over the summer, that is the season, not a failure.
A sealed system failure in a low cost countertop portable costs more to put right than the machine costs to replace, and we will tell you that rather than sell you the visit. Undercounter, outdoor and commercial machines are a different conversation entirely and almost always worth repairing.
Manufacturers rate ice machines at two published conditions: 70 degree ambient air with 50 degree incoming water for maximum production, and 90 degree air with 70 degree water for standard production. The estimate above derates from the ideal condition at 0.55 percent per degree of air above 70 and 0.33 percent per degree of water above 50. As a check on that: an industry sizing guide gives a real machine rated at 600 pounds falling to closer to 500 pounds at 90 and 70, and this model returns 499. It is a model rather than a manufacturer figure for your exact unit, so treat it as the right ballpark rather than a specification.
If your ice maker is inside your refrigerator or freezer, is plumbed and built into cabinetry, or is a modular commercial head sitting on a storage bin, that is a different machine with different failures. It has its own page, with a full no-ice decision tree and an ice quality reader.
Free standing ice makers cover an enormous price range, from a countertop box that costs less than a weekly grocery run to an outdoor machine that costs more than a refrigerator. The right advice is completely different at each end, and a company that treats them all the same is not doing you a favor.
So we say it plainly. A sealed system failure in a low cost countertop portable is not worth repairing, and we will not pretend otherwise to book a job. A free standing undercounter, outdoor or commercial machine is a serious piece of refrigeration and almost always worth repairing properly. And a surprising share of calls on both ends turn out to be clearance, ambient temperature or a reservoir that has never been cleaned, which is why both checks on this page exist.
