Depending on the model and program, some water may remain in the sump area as part of normal operation. A larger amount of standing water across the bottom of the wash cabinet is different and may indicate a drainage problem.

If the dishwasher displays a drainage warning, fault message, or error code, take a photo before resetting the appliance. That information can be useful during diagnosis.

1. Turn the Dishwasher Off Before Checking the Drain Area

Before removing the filter or reaching into the bottom of the dishwasher, switch the appliance off.

If you need to inspect the drain pump area beyond routine filter cleaning, disconnect power according to the instructions for your model.

This is especially important because small pieces of glass can sometimes collect near the drain system and may be difficult to see.

2. Clean the Filter Assembly

Remove the lower rack and inspect the filter at the bottom of the dishwasher.

Food particles, labels, small pieces of debris, and other material can restrict water flow.

Remove and clean the filter according to your Miele model's instructions, rinse it under running water, and use a soft brush if needed.

When reinstalling the filter, make sure it sits correctly and locks securely into position.

3. Look for Visible Debris Around the Drain Area

After removing the filter, check the accessible area beneath it for visible debris.

6. Consider Whether the Problem Started After Plumbing Work

If the dishwasher stopped draining immediately after:

• plumbing beneath the sink was changed

• the dishwasher was relocated

• cabinetry or flooring work was completed

the problem may be related to the drain connection or installation rather than an internal dishwasher failure.

Tell your technician about any recent work when scheduling service.

A blocked disposal or misrouted drain hose can mimic serious Miele drain failures.

What If the Dishwasher Still Will Not Drain?
